Minutes of the OVH Club Meeting

May 15, 2006

 

John / KG4NXT called meeting to order at 2000 Eastern Time.

 

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, all present stated their names and call signs.  There were 25 OVH members and three guests present.

 

BUSINESS MEETING

 

HARRY D. VORHAUER SCHOLARSHIP – Jim / W4JTP – There were six applicants for the 2006 Harry D. Vorhauer Scholarship.  The recipient was Elizabeth Heartney.  Elizabeth is an outstanding student at Thomas Jefferson High School.  Elizabeth will attend Duke University, where she will major in Mechanical Engineering.  Congratulations Elizabeth.

 

PROGRAM

 

Paul James / N2PJ gave a brief presentation on Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, and specifically talked about their effective radiated power versus their “advertised” radiated power.

 

BUSINESS MEETING – CONTINUED

 

Bill / N3OH read the Treasurer’s report.

 

The minutes of the April 2006 OVH meeting were approved.

 

MEMBERSHIP – John / WA1STU – Three potential new OVH members were read in and will be voted on at the June 2006 OVH meeting.  These were Tom Trump / KI4JPY, Christopher Akers / KI4OBU, and Robert Friend / KC4TCN.

 

EDUCATION – John / WA1STU – There are now four new licensed hams as a result of the most recent OVH technician class.  Two others who were in the class will take their Technician license exams soon.  John thanked everyone who helped with the class.

 

FIELD DAY – John / WA1STU – John reminded us that Field Day will take place during the last full weekend in June.  John noted that we are currently planning on running a 5A station, but that has not been finalized.  We had a general discussion regarding Field Day issues and planning.

 

HAMFEST – Art / W1CRO – We need volunteers to help get things set up on Saturday.  We will also need volunteers to arrive no later than 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.  Everything is on schedule at this point in time.  We had a general discussion regarding various Hamfest issues.

 

REPEATERS – Art / W1CRO – The repeaters are all working well.  Thanks go to all on the Repeater Committee who have worked to keep the repeaters up and running.

 

BREAK

 

ARES – David / KG4GIY – The MS 150 bike ride will take place this weekend.  ARES training will take place on the third Saturday in July.  Information is available on the Prince William County ARES website.  David noted that hurricane season starts in two weeks, and reminded us to have our equipment in good working order.  Brian / WC4J noted that there will be a major MS event near the end of September that will take place over three days.  About 150 hams will be needed for this event.  More information will be forthcoming.

 

WEEKLY OVH THURSDAY-NIGHT NET – John / KG4NXT – Wayne / AG4ZZ has become a new net controller.  Joe / KI4OHR will become a new net controller soon.  Thank you Wayne and Joe.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

Brian / WC4J noted that there will be a contest on June 10 and 11 and asked for help with that contest.

 

Bill / N3OH reminded us that the OVH will host a special event commemorating the 2nd battle of Manassas / Bull Run in August, and asked us for ideas regarding a special event card.

 

50/50 RAFFLE - $30 was collected, and John / WA1STU won.  John requested that his winning share of $15 be donated to the Field Day 2006 budget.  Thank you John for your donation.
