Message From the President
As I write this, it's been almost a month since the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York. The second night of bombing in Afghanistan is underway and we are being warned of the probability of further terrorist action. There is a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and season isn't over yet. In addition, we have several public service events coming up which provide opportunities to practice emergency procedures as well as help the community. We've discussed preparedness several times but I'll reiterate briefly:
But let's also remember that this hobby is supposed to be fun. Turn on your HT and call out on 146.52 simplex. Take part in conversational nets and contests. Find a clear frequency and call CQ 40 meters (or 20, 10, etc.). Explore new modes or renew rusty CW skills.
Let's enjoy the hobby!
73, Jeff/N1SN

Committee Reports
Education: Bill Hinley/K4WRG - No changes - Oct 2nd at 7pm at Stonewall. Get the book Now You're Talking 4th Ed.
Hamfest: Jack McDermott/N4YIC - Hamfest was not a great money maker this year. Dropped about $2K this year over last. Discussion of increasing the entrance fee to six dollars. Cannot say that we would increase the attendance, so we need some other way to increase the revenue stream on next years Hamfest. Six and seven dollars seems to be the norm for admittance fees. Motion to increase the fee on the gate. Tailgate would stay at $5 and the commercial tables will stay at $30. Motion carried. Jack's wife is doing better. The documentation for next year's fest is with Mary-Lu for passing to Bill South/N4WJN to put on the web site. Need to modify our liability to exclude the RV area.
Membership: David Lane/KG4GIY - Three to vote: John Heartney/KG4NXT, James Hartselle/AF4QG, Robert Myers/K2TV. Welcome to OVH.
ARES: David Lane/KG4GIY - Call Station Hotel to volunteer for the Salvation Army.
Bike Ride: KE4NFK - Bike Ride Saturday September 29. No water stops. Needs rovers for each route (3) and a couple of others for spot locations.
JOTA, October 20th: John/N4YOB is heading up the effort. Swim club request has gone out. Friday the 19th for set up. Scouts will be contacted once we have a firm location. Girl Scouts may also be involved. Three stations. Support on Saturday will also be needed for stations and rig donations.
Bake Sale: Mary-Lu - $120 to Wickfors for cause as selected.
...BREAK...
Erv W/KT4DS: Mary Kay Hill and John Medici gave us kudos for our support in the Tuesday "phone out".

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO VOLUNTEERED
Greetings!
On behalf of my office at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and as a veteran, I would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to all of you who volunteered your time, service, and equipment to do all the hard work and spend the many long hours to helping with the aftermath of the attacks on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and the aircraft that crashed in western Pennsylvania.
It takes a dedicated, strong, and highly patriotic person to give up his or her normal family and work life and make a special effort to travel daily to help at the disaster relief operations sites. While many rushed home to be with their families, you rushed to aid the authorities deal with the disaster. I understand the conditions were difficult at best, but those of you who volunteered did so in the best traditional spirit of Amateur Radio and served as exemplary patriots -- you all pulled together and made it happen. I cannot emphasize enough how significant your service was and how large a contribution you made. I have talked up your support with other Federal agencies when the opportunities presented themselves. For this valiant effort, you all deserve a big thank you from the rest of us who are honored by your service. Thanks also for keeping your call-down rosters and emergency plans updated and your 'go kit' ready.
You're a great group of hams. You showed the cowardly terrorists that we will prevail. You made ham radio proud, you made America proud, and you made us all proud to be a fellow Amateur Radio operator. Hooyah!

AO-40 SUCCESSFULLY TESTS GPS EXPERIMENT
The ARRL Letter, Vol 20, No 40
AMSAT News Service reports that the GPS experiment on the AO-40 satellite has undergone successful testing. The experiment--supplied and sponsored by NASA--is designed to determine if it is possible to get positional data while outside of the GPS ring of satellites.
"We received a signal on the apogee receiver from about 52,000 km out with good signal levels," said Jim White, WD0E, who's been the AMSAT coordinator and chief operator for this activity. "Further data is being gathered and those downloaded so far are being analyzed."
There are two GPS receivers on AO-40, A and B. The A receiver is for receiving signals while in the vicinity of apogee--when the satellite is farthest from Earth. The B receiver provides signal reception in the vicinity of perigee--when the satellite is closest to Earth. Both receivers are operational, and data are passed from the receivers through the RUDAK digital transponder to the S-band transmitter.
AMSAT-VP for Human Spaceflight Programs Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, was instrumental in setting up the GPS experiment. "If this experiment goes the way I expect, it will revolutionize the way we use GPS in space," Bauer said. "Many future HEO (high Earth orbit) spacecraft will be able to take advantage of GPS for autonomous navigation and station keeping."
Earlier this month, AO-40 ground controllers successfully tested the spacecraft's 24-GHz transmitter. The K-band transmitter on 24.048 GHz was activated September 9 on orbit 396 and connected to the passband and beacon inputs that feed the S2 (2.4 GHz) transmitter.
For more information on AO-40, visit the AMSAT-NA Web site, http://www.amsat.org.
